Five Baptisms: From Water to Fire, Into Christ and the Holy Spirit

By Penny

Listen instead of read

What if you were taught to begin walking with Jesus, but never clearly taught how to receive the Holy Spirit?

What if salvation was presented as the finish line, when Scripture presents it as the BEGINNING OF SONSHIP, POWER, IDENTITY, AND MISSION?

Here is the central line:

John baptized by water; Jesus baptizes in the Holy Spirit.

No believer should be told to follow Jesus while remaining unaware of the Holy Spirit’s presence, promise, power, and daily leadership. Salvation and the call to receive the Holy Spirit should be presented together immediately, not separated by years of religious tradition, uncertainty, or lack of teaching.

That does not mean every biblical account uses identical timing or outward manifestation. It does mean every believer should be invited to receive the Holy Spirit NOW, with faith, humility, and a hunger for God.

The Five-Baptism Framework

Different teachers count the biblical baptisms differently. Scripture does not contain one verse that literally lists the phrase “five baptisms.” This is a teaching framework that gathers several biblical categories, images, and experiences together.

The goal is not theological confusion.

The goal is clarity, maturity, and encounter with God!

A diverse group of believers studying Scripture together in a warm church classroom

1. Water Baptism: Repentance, Identification, and Public Obedience

John’s baptism was a baptism of repentance:

“John did baptize in the wilderness, and preach the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins.” , Mark 1:4, KJV

John prepared Israel to recognize the Messiah. His message was direct: turn from sin, prepare your heart, and get ready for the King.

After Jesus completed His work, baptism became the commanded public identification of disciples with the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit:

“Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost.” , Matthew 28:19, KJV

Peter connected repentance, baptism, and the gift of the Holy Spirit:

“Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.” , Acts 2:38, KJV

Water baptism does not function as a performance by which you earn salvation. It is a visible act of faith and obedience. You are declaring: I belong to Jesus. My old identity is not my master. I am publicly identifying with the death, burial, and resurrection of Christ.

2. Baptism in the Holy Spirit: Jesus’ Promise and Empowering Gift

John made the distinction unmistakable:

“I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I… he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire.” , Matthew 3:11, KJV

John baptized by water.

Jesus baptizes in the Holy Spirit.

Jesus repeated this promise before His ascension:

“For John truly baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence.” , Acts 1:5, KJV

And then:

“Ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me…” , Acts 1:8, KJV

In Acts 2:1–4, the disciples were filled with the Holy Spirit. In Acts 10:44–48, the Holy Spirit fell on Gentile hearers while Peter was still speaking. In Acts 19:1–6, Paul encountered disciples who had not yet received the Holy Spirit and taught them more completely.

Notice the pattern: Jesus does not merely save people from something; He empowers them for something.

The Holy Spirit is not a magic formula. He is not a spiritual achievement badge. You do not earn Him by volume, emotion, vocabulary, or religious performance. He is God’s gift and presence, received by grace and faith.

The timing and outward expression vary across biblical accounts. The call to receive Him does not.

Why wait years to learn about the One Jesus promised to send?

3. Baptism With Fire: Refining and Judgment

“Baptism with fire” requires careful interpretation.

Matthew 3:11–12 places fire beside the imagery of the threshing floor, gathering wheat, burning chaff, and unquenchable fire. Because of this context, many interpreters understand the fire as a reference to judgment, especially for those who reject God.

Other believers emphasize fire as a picture of purification and refining, the holy work of God burning away what cannot remain in a surrendered life.

We should not flatten a debated passage into one invented certainty.

A faithful reading recognizes both dimensions:

  • For the surrendered believer, God’s fire can refine motives, purify desires, and expose what is false.
  • For the resistant and unrepentant, divine fire warns of judgment.
  • For everyone, Jesus’ coming demands a response.

Are you asking God to refine you, or are you protecting the very things He is confronting?

The fire of God is not sent to shame a son or daughter. His conviction is specific and restorative. It leads to repentance without condemnation. It produces holiness without producing an orphan spirit.

4. Baptized Into Christ and His Death

Romans 6:3–4 teaches that believers are baptized into Christ’s death, buried with Him, and raised to walk in newness of life.

This is the deepest identity shift in the framework.

You are not merely joining a religious organization. You are being identified with the crucified and risen Christ. Galatians 3:27 says:

“For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ.”

To be baptized into Christ means:

  1. His death becomes the end of your old master.
  2. His burial becomes the burial of your former identity.
  3. His resurrection becomes the source of your new life.
  4. His Sonship becomes the foundation of your belonging.
  5. His mission becomes the direction of your obedience.

This is why HSMS, Loving God Back, must remain the number-one priority. Ministry flows from relationship. The King-Priest-Prophet-Apostle does not serve to earn sonship. The mature son serves because he knows he is already loved, accepted, and positioned in Christ.

5. Baptized Into Moses: Deliverance and Corporate Identification

Paul writes:

“Moreover, brethren, I would not that ye should be ignorant, how that all our fathers were under the cloud, and all passed through the sea; and were all baptized unto Moses in the cloud and in the sea.” , 1 Corinthians 10:1–2, KJV

Israel’s passage through the Red Sea was a deliverance event. They were brought out of slavery, through the waters, and into a new identity as a people under covenant leadership.

“Baptized into Moses” is therefore typological. It points forward to the greater deliverance found in Christ.

The pattern is powerful:

  • Bondage is confronted.
  • A mediator is followed.
  • The waters are crossed.
  • An old identity is left behind.
  • A people emerges for God’s purpose.

In Christ, you are not rescued merely to stand still on the shore. You are delivered so you can become part of a people who carry the presence of God into the earth.

The Honorable Mention: Baptism of Suffering

Some teachers count the baptism of suffering separately because Jesus directly used baptism language for His coming suffering:

“Can ye drink of the cup that I drink of, and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with?” , Mark 10:38, KJV

Jesus also said:

“I have a baptism to be baptized with; and how am I straitened till it be accomplished!” , Luke 12:50, KJV

This is not permission to pursue pain, abuse, or unnecessary hardship. It is a sober recognition that obedience to God can involve sacrifice, rejection, endurance, and costly love.

The Christian life is not built on comfort as the highest value.

It is built on faithfulness to Jesus.

From Salvation to Spirit-Filled Sonship

The Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church is commonly understood to receive a broader biblical canon of 81 books, including 1 Enoch. Jude 14–15 quotes a prophecy attributed to Enoch, commonly connected with 1 Enoch 1:9.

That historical and canonical context is worth acknowledging, but Enoch must remain supporting context, not authority above Scripture. The center of Christian revelation is Jesus Christ, witnessed in the biblical canon and proclaimed by the apostles.

So what do these baptisms produce in your life?

KING: You steward provision and justice.

PRIEST: You reconcile people to God and nurture them in beloved identity.

PROPHET: You call out the gold in others and give them a reputation to live up to.

APOSTLE: You make disciples and train replicas of Jesus among the nations.

But all four functions flow from one primary reality:

You are a beloved son or daughter of God through Jesus Christ.

SEE ONE. DO ONE. TEACH ONE.

Receive what Jesus promised. Walk it out. Help another believer understand.

A Direct Response: Receive Jesus and the Holy Spirit

If you have never surrendered your life to Jesus, begin there. The Holy Spirit is not a substitute for repentance, faith, or the cross. You do not receive power to earn salvation. You receive salvation by grace, and then you welcome the Holy Spirit’s empowering presence into your life.

Pray sincerely:

Jesus, I believe You are the Son of God. I believe You died for my sins and rose again. I turn from my old life and surrender myself to You. Forgive me, make me new, and lead me as my Lord. Holy Spirit, I welcome Your presence. Fill me, teach me, empower me, and help me follow Jesus in truth and love. I receive Your grace and yield my life to Your leadership. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Then ask God for wisdom, remain anchored in Scripture, and connect with mature believers who can help you grow.

If you have already received Christ but have never been taught about the baptism in the Holy Spirit, do not live in shame. You are not disqualified. You are being invited deeper.

Conclusion: Do Not Leave People at the Shore

No one should be told to follow Jesus while remaining unaware of the Holy Spirit.

Teach water.

Teach repentance.

Teach union with Christ.

Teach deliverance.

Teach the refining holiness of God.

And teach believers immediately that Jesus baptizes in the Holy Spirit.

Lukewarmness is not a safe middle ground. It is a bullet train to hell. Love tells the truth, offers the choice, and calls for a clear response.

Would you like to ask Jesus into your heart right now? Yes? Or no?

A Word of Acceptance

My Son, My Daughter,
You are Accepted, not rejected.
You are good enough, and I Love you.
I am proud of you, and you do it right.
I'm dancing over you day and night!
