Proverbs 12: A Good Word, a Stooping Heart, and the Call to #NoPhoneSunday

By Penny

Listen instead of read

“Heaviness in the heart of man maketh it stoop: but a good word maketh it glad.” Proverbs 12:25 (KJV)

This is your Saturday prep. Tomorrow is #NoPhoneSunday, and we are making a simple, powerful invitation:

#NOPHONESUNDAY

Why? Because Proverbs 12 describes something many of us can recognize immediately. A heavy heart stoops. The head drops. The shoulders bend. The eyes look down.

Sometimes that posture comes from sorrow.

Sometimes anxiety.

Sometimes shame.

And sometimes, we have trained our bodies to stoop because our eyes are locked on a screen.

This is the PHONE-A-PHANT posture: head down, heart distracted, eyes fixed on the device, and the living world passing by unnoticed.

But Proverbs 12:25 gives us another way: a good word makes the heart glad.

A greeting. A question. A blessing. A moment of eye contact. A sentence that calls out the gold in another person.

“I see you.”
“How are you really doing?”
“You matter.”
“God has not forgotten you.”

That is the greeting anointing in action, not performance, not religious theater, but the holy discipline of being present.

The Problem: When the Phone Becomes the Default Posture

Phones are useful tools. They help us work, communicate, navigate, learn, and serve. But a tool becomes a master when we cannot put it down.

Have you ever reached for your phone while standing in line, walking across a parking lot, waiting for an elevator, or sitting with people you love?

Have you ever looked down at a screen and missed the person right in front of you?

Distracted walking reduces awareness of traffic, obstacles, and other people. Safety guidance consistently recommends stopping before using a phone rather than walking and scrolling at the same time. You can review practical guidance from OrthoInfo on distracted walking.

This is not about condemnation. It is about reclaiming your attention.

Your eyes are a gateway. Your attention is stewardship. Your presence is a gift.

A Good Word Begins With Looking Up

The family in our ongoing story has learned to recognize the moment when everyone becomes quiet, not because peace has arrived, but because each person has disappeared into a different screen.

Then someone looks up.

Someone smiles.

Someone says, “Tell me about your day.”

The atmosphere changes.

That is the power of a good word. It does not deny pain. It does not pretend every problem is small. It brings truthful love into the moment.

Try the Greeting Anointing:

  1. LOOK UP: Make eye contact before reaching for your phone.
  2. NOTICE: Observe the person, place, and moment in front of you.
  3. SPEAK LIFE: Offer a sincere greeting or encouraging sentence.
  4. CALL OUT GOLD: Name a strength, kindness, effort, or possibility you can genuinely see.
  5. STAY PRESENT: Let the conversation breathe without checking the screen.

SEE ONE. DO ONE. TEACH ONE.

SEE ONE: Watch someone put down the phone and become fully present.
DO ONE: Put your phone away and greet someone.
TEACH ONE: Invite a friend or family member to do the same.

The Umbrella Protocol: Obeying the Helpful Thought

Here is a simple metaphor for hearing and obeying God’s voice.

Imagine that you are leaving home on a sunny day when an unexpected thought crosses your normal thinking: “Take an umbrella.”

It does not seem necessary. The sky is clear. You may even feel silly carrying one.

But you take it.

Later, the rain comes.

The umbrella did not create the storm. It simply prepared you for a need you could not yet see.

We call this an intersecting thought, a thought that crosses your normal thinking. In our faith-based teaching, such a thought should not be accepted automatically. Test it.

Does it produce love, patience, kindness, self-control, courage, and truthful conviction? Or does it steal, kill, destroy, shame, terrify, and confuse?

Hebrews 4:12 teaches that the Word of God helps us discern “the thoughts and intents of the heart.” Scripture, prayer, wise counsel, and the fruit produced by a thought help us separate soul-level reaction from Spirit-led direction.

HEAR. TEST. OBEY.

And tomorrow, perhaps the intersecting thought is very practical:

“Put the phone away.”

Your #NoPhoneSunday Challenge

Do not begin with an impossible standard. Start small at 2:30 PM and work upward.

Choose Your Level:

  • Level 1: Put your phone on silent for 30 minutes.
  • Level 2: Leave it in another room during a meal.
  • Level 3: Leave it at home or in the car while you walk, shop, or visit.
  • Level 4: Keep it away for the rest of the afternoon and evening, except for genuine emergencies or essential responsibilities.

Especially practice this in lines and while walking.

Do not become a PHONE-A-PHANT at the coffee shop, grocery store, airport, sidewalk, or church entrance. Look up. Notice people. Be human again.

If you must use the phone, stop walking and step safely aside. If you are crossing a street, put it away completely.

This is not anti-technology. It is pro-attention. It is pro-family. It is pro-neighbor. It is pro-presence.

HSMS: Loving God Back Comes First

At Melchizedek Ministries, we believe all ministry activity flows from the primary relationship of SONSHIP, what we call HSMS: Loving God Back.

Before you function as KING-PRIEST-PROPHET-APOSTLE, you are invited to love God, receive His love, and live from that secure relationship.

Our mission is:

  1. Encourage reflection on identity and purpose through a faith-based framework.
  2. Give permission and encouragement to move into ministry.

The implementation is presented in two steps:

  • Step 1: Receive a Birth Sky Message through Christological Astronomy and the Maji methodology to help you reflect on the “Promised One” in your own life.
  • Step 2: Ramp up ministry: Found, Funded with endowments, Staffed with volunteers, Supported by intercessors, Thrive, Call others up, and Function in the Order of Melchizedek.

“Write the vision, and make it plain upon tables, that he may run that readeth it.” Habakkuk 2:2 (KJV)

This is a faith-based framework for reflection and ministry development, not a replacement for Scripture, prayer, wise counsel, or professional care.

If Your Heart Feels Heavy

If you have made a mess of your life through sin, regret, addiction, broken relationships, or poor choices, do not assume your story is over.

A stooping heart can be lifted.

Ask for help. Tell the truth. Take the next right step. If you are in danger or experiencing abuse, prioritize safety and seek qualified local support.

We pray:

Lord, we ask for restoration, wisdom, healing, reconciliation, and provision according to Your will. We receive Joel 2:25 as biblical hope, not a promise of a specific payment, amount, or timing.

If you need prayer, contact prayer@melchizedekministries.church.

Conclusion: Put Down the Phone and Pick Up the Good Word

Tomorrow, begin at 2:30 PM.

Leave the phone at home or in the car when practical. Put it in a basket during a meal. Stop using it while walking. Look into someone’s eyes. Offer a greeting.

HEAD UP. HEART OPEN. EYES PRESENT.

The world does not need more distracted observers. It needs people who can carry the presence of God into ordinary places through attention, kindness, courage, and a good word.

Share this with someone who needs permission to look up.

A Clear Invitation to Jesus

Would you like to ask Jesus into your heart right now? Yes? Or no?

If your answer is yes, you can pray:

Standard Prayer of Salvation

Lord Jesus, I, [your name], confess that I have sinned and need a Savior. I believe You are the Son of God, that You died for my sins, that You were buried, and that You rose again. I repent of my sins and turn to You. Please forgive me, make me new, and become Lord of my life. I receive Your salvation by faith. I surrender my future, my choices, and my identity to You. Baptize me in the Holy Spirit now and lead me into all truth. Thank You for saving me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

At the exact moment you are saved, we believe you are baptized in the Holy Spirit and welcomed into new life in Christ. Continue by reading Scripture, praying, joining a healthy community of believers, and learning to follow Jesus faithfully.
