Proverbs 19: Cease the Endless Scroll, Hear Counsel, and the Call to #NoPhoneSunday

By Penny

Listen instead of read

What if the loudest voice in your life is not the voice of God, but the voice of the feed?

What if your soul is moving constantly, consuming endlessly, and still starving for REAL KNOWLEDGE?

Proverbs 19 gives us a direct command for this moment:

“Also, that the soul be without knowledge, it is not good; and he that hasteth with his feet sinneth.” — Proverbs 19:2 (KJV)

That is the reflex scroll in one verse.

Your thumb moves. Your eyes move. Your feet move from room to room. You arrive everywhere, but are you actually present anywhere?

This is your Saturday prep. We are preparing for #NoPhoneSunday tomorrow.

Start small. Start at 2:30 PM.

Put the phone away. Leave it at home or in the car wherever practical. Do not carry the temptation into the room. Work your way toward a fuller phone-free Sunday.

LOOK UP. BE PRESENT. BE HUMAN AGAIN.

The PHONE-A-PHANT Habit

A PHONE-A-PHANT is physically present but mentally gone.

The body is standing in the checkout line, but the soul is somewhere else.

The body is walking down the sidewalk, but the eyes are buried in the screen.

The body is sitting at the family table, but the attention is trapped in somebody else’s argument, advertisement, crisis, or performance.

The hand reaches for the phone without permission.

Standing in line? Scroll.

Waiting for coffee? Scroll.

Walking to the car? Scroll.

A conversation becomes quiet for three seconds? Scroll.

Proverbs 19:2 warns that haste without knowledge is not harmless. Speed is not automatically progress. Activity is not automatically wisdom. The feed can keep you moving while quietly training you to avoid stillness, reflection, prayer, and meaningful conversation.

THE FEED GIVES YOU NOISE. GOD GIVES YOU COUNSEL.

Which one did you hear most this week?

Ten Thousand Devices, One Counsel That Stands

Proverbs 19:20–21 says:

“Hear counsel, and receive instruction, that thou mayest be wise in thy latter end. There are many devices in a man's heart; nevertheless the counsel of the LORD, that shall stand.” — Proverbs 19:20–21 (KJV)

There are many devices in the heart, and many devices in the hand.

The modern feed delivers ten thousand voices. Every voice claims urgency. Every post wants a reaction. Every notification implies that you are falling behind.

But WHAT COUNSEL WILL STILL STAND WHEN THE NOTIFICATIONS STOP?

God’s counsel does not need to manufacture outrage to hold your attention. It does not need to steal your peace to prove its importance. It forms wisdom over time.

The purpose of #NoPhoneSunday is not to make a religious performance out of avoiding technology. It is to create room to hear, love, notice, and respond.

Use the time to:

  1. Pray without immediately documenting the moment.
  2. Listen without preparing your next response.
  3. Greet people you normally pass without seeing.
  4. Walk without scrolling.
  5. Eat with family without a screen at the center.
  6. Notice the gold in the people God has placed in front of you.

Presence is part of SONSHIP.

The orphan spirit scrolls because it is afraid of missing something. A son looks up because he knows he is already seen, already loved, and already welcomed by the Father through Jesus.

Cease the Teacher That Teaches You to Err

Proverbs 19:27 says:

“Cease, my son, to hear the instruction that causeth to err from the words of knowledge.” — Proverbs 19:27 (KJV)

The scroll is not neutral simply because it is convenient.

It teaches you all day long.

It teaches you what to fear.

It teaches you whom to hate.

It teaches you what to desire.

It teaches you how quickly to judge.

It teaches you to confuse outrage with engagement.

Proverbs 19:11 gives another necessary warning:

“The discretion of a man deferreth his anger; and it is his glory to pass over a transgression.” — Proverbs 19:11 (KJV)

But the scroll often manufactures outrage and calls it participation.

A wise person can pause.

A wise person can ask, “Do I actually know enough to react?”

A wise person can overlook an offense instead of feeding it.

A wise person can close the application, take a breath, and return to the person standing in front of them.

The Umbrella Protocol: Obey the Intersecting Thought

Consider the umbrella protocol.

You are leaving home. The sky looks clear. You sense a simple thought: “Take an umbrella.”

It does not seem necessary. You may not understand why. But you take it anyway.

Later, the weather changes.

This is a simple illustration of what our ministry describes as an intersecting thought: a thought that crosses normal thinking and invites you to pause, test, and respond. This is a faith-based practice, not a claim that every impulse is God’s voice.

How do you discern it?

  • Does the thought produce the Fruits of the Spirit?
  • Does it move you toward love, patience, kindness, self-control, and truth?
  • Does it bring loving conviction without shame, guilt, or fear?
  • Or does it steal, kill, and destroy peace, dignity, and relationship?

Hebrews 4:12 teaches that the Word of God is able to divide soul and spirit and discern the thoughts and intents of the heart.

So test the thought. Pray. Compare it with Scripture. Seek wise counsel. Then obey when obedience is clear.

HEAR. TEST. OBEY.

The phone can interrupt that process by filling every quiet space with other people’s thoughts.

Tomorrow, create some quiet.

Your Saturday Prep Guide

Before tomorrow begins, make a simple plan:

1. Set the 2:30 PM starting point

At 2:30 PM tomorrow, put the phone away.

Do not demand instant perfection. Start small and build.

2. Remove access where practical

Leave the phone at home or in the car. Put it in a drawer. Place it in another room. If you carry the temptation into the room, you will spend the entire afternoon negotiating with it.

3. Replace the habit

Do not merely remove the scroll. Replace it with something alive:

  • Pray.
  • Read Proverbs 19.
  • Take a walk.
  • Call on a neighbor in person.
  • Share a meal.
  • Ask someone a meaningful question.
  • Listen for the intersecting thought.
  • Thank God for the people already in your life.

4. Teach the practice

SEE ONE. DO ONE. TEACH ONE.

See someone practice presence. Do it yourself. Teach your family to build the habit.

Look up. Be present. Notice the gold.

A Word for the Discouraged

If you feel hopeless, ashamed, or overwhelmed by the mess your choices have made, do not believe that your worst day is the final word over your life.

God’s counsel stands.

We pray: “May the Lord restore the years the locust have stolen.” Lord, we ask for restoration, wisdom, healing, reconciliation, and provision according to Your will. We receive Joel 2:25 as biblical hope, not a promise of a specific payment, amount, or timing.

HSMS: Loving God Back

At Melchizedek Ministries, HSMS, Loving God Back, is the #1 priority.

Ministry flows from relationship. The King-Priest-Prophet-Apostle expression does not begin with frantic activity. It begins with receiving the Father’s love through Jesus and responding in sonship.

Our mission is to:

  1. Encourage reflection on identity and purpose through a faith-based framework.
  2. Give permission and encouragement to move into ministry.

The implementation is simple:

  • Step 1: Explore a Birth Sky Message through Christological Astronomy and the Maji methodology as a faith-based way to reflect on the “Promised One” in your own life.
  • Step 2: Ramp up ministry, Found, Funded, Staffed, Supported, Thriving, Calling others up, and Functioning in the Order of Melchizedek.

“Write the vision, and make it plain upon tables.” — Habakkuk 2:2 (KJV)

A phone-free Sunday will not accomplish this mission by itself. But it can help you recover the attention required to love God, love people, and obey what He places in front of you.

Conclusion: Who Had Your Ear?

Proverbs 19 asks a serious question:

Whose counsel did you hear most this week?

The feed may give you endless devices, endless voices, and endless reasons to hurry. But the counsel of the Lord stands.

Tomorrow, cease the endless scroll.

Start at 2:30 PM.

Leave the phone at home or in the car wherever practical.

Pray. Listen. Greet people. Walk without scrolling. Sit with your family. Look up.

BREAK THE PHONE-A-PHANT HABIT.

BE PRESENT. BE HUMAN AGAIN.

Share this with someone who needs permission to put the phone down.

A Clear Invitation to Jesus

Would you like to ask Jesus into your heart right now? Yes? Or no?

If your answer is yes, you may pray:

Father God, I come to You in the name of Jesus. I, [your name], confess that I have sinned and need a Savior. I believe that Jesus Christ is Your Son, that He died for my sins, and that You raised Him from the dead. I repent of my sins and turn to You. Jesus, I ask You to forgive me, come into my heart, and be my Lord and Savior. I receive Your salvation, Your forgiveness, and Your new life. I believe I am accepted as Your beloved son or daughter. Thank You for saving me. In Jesus’ name, amen.

We believe that at the exact moment you are saved, you are baptized in the Holy Spirit. Begin walking with Jesus, open the Scriptures, seek wise believers, and continue receiving instruction.
