Put On Love: The One Garment That Holds Everything Together (Colossians 3:14)
By Penny
This morning, Tuesday, September 22, 2026, Stuart T. Long woke up and asked God, “What verse do You want to say to me?”
The answer was Colossians 3:14.
He looked up the surrounding passage and found a picture that is both simple and revolutionary:
“Beyond all these things put on and wrap yourselves in [unselfish] love, which is the perfect bond of unity [for everything is bound together in agreement when each one seeks the best for others].”- Colossians 3:14 (AMP)
Why does Paul describe love as something we put on?
Because love is not merely one good quality among many. Love is the outer garment. It is the cloak over compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, patience, forgiveness, service, wisdom, and obedience.
Without love, the whole outfit falls apart.
The Problem: We Try to Repair Relationships Without Putting on Love
When a household becomes tense, what do we usually try first?
We work harder.
We explain more.
We demand change.
We tighten control.
We build a stronger case for why we are right.
But a relationship cannot be repaired by pressure alone. A family cannot be unified by management techniques without a change of heart. A workplace cannot become healthy simply because everyone receives better instructions.
The garment falls apart when love was never put on over the top.
Colossians 3 describes the practical wardrobe of a mature believer: compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, patience, bearing with one another, and forgiveness. Then Paul says, “Beyond all these things”, over the top of everything, put on unselfish love.
Love is the binding.
Love is what holds patience together when the conversation becomes difficult.
Love is what keeps truth from becoming cruelty.
Love is what turns correction into restoration.
Love is what makes forgiveness more than a slogan.
What would change in your home if you stopped asking, “How can I win this argument?” and started asking, “What is the most loving, truthful, and restorative response available to me?”
The Solution: Put On Love Deliberately
Love is not always an automatic feeling. Sometimes it is a deliberate act of obedience.
You put it on before the meeting.
You put it on before the difficult conversation.
You put it on before correcting your child.
You put it on before responding to your spouse.
You put it on before opening the email.
1. Let the Peace of Christ Decide
Paul continues:
“Let the peace of Christ [the inner calm of one who walks daily with Him] be the controlling factor in your hearts [deciding and settling questions that arise].”- Colossians 3:15 (AMP)
The peace of Christ functions like an umpire. It calls the play. It helps determine whether a response belongs in the game or should be rejected.
This does not mean every peaceful feeling is automatically God’s direction. It means the believer learns to bring decisions under the rule of Christ rather than under panic, resentment, pride, or fear.
Before you answer, pause.
Is this response coming from love?
Is it consistent with the character of Jesus?
Will it bring honest conviction without shame and condemnation?
Does it seek the best for the other person?
Let peace settle the question.
2. Let the Word of Christ Make Its Home in You
Paul says:
“Let the [spoken] word of Christ have its home within you [dwelling in your heart and mind: permeating every aspect of your being] as you teach [spiritual things] and admonish and train one another with all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs with thankfulness in your hearts to God.”- Colossians 3:16 (AMP)
A guest visits. A resident lives there.
The Word of Christ is not meant to pass through your mind once a week and then disappear. It is meant to make its home in you: to influence how you think, speak, work, parent, forgive, lead, and serve.
This is the foundation of HSMS: Loving God Back. Ministry does not begin with frantic activity. It begins with receiving the love of God and responding to Him from sonship.
We do not love in order to earn acceptance.
We love because we have received grace.
We do not serve to convince God we belong.
We serve because, in Christ, we are learning to live as beloved sons and daughters.
That is SONSHIP IN ACTION.

Where Love Gets Tested: The Household
Colossians 3 does not leave love in the abstract. It brings love directly into marriage, parenting, family life, and work.
Wives and Husbands
The passage calls wives to honor their husbands and calls husbands to love their wives with affectionate, sympathetic, selfless love that seeks the best for them.
That means authority cannot be separated from accountability, and submission cannot be separated from dignity. The question is not, “How much can I demand?” The question is, “How can I protect, honor, understand, and serve the person God has entrusted to me?”
Love is not domination.
Love is not manipulation.
Love is not silent resentment.
Love seeks the best.
Children and Fathers
Children are instructed to respect their parents. Fathers are specifically warned not to provoke, irritate, exasperate, humiliate, or break the spirit of their children.
That warning matters.
A father can win an argument and lose a relationship. He can enforce outward behavior while crushing inward courage. He can correct a mistake without communicating rejection.
Love tells the truth without breaking the child’s spirit.
The goal is not merely compliant children. The goal is children who grow in wisdom, security, responsibility, and confidence before God.

Workers and Leaders
Paul also speaks to servants and workers:
“Whatever you do [whatever your task may be], work from the soul [that is, put in your very best effort], as [something done] for the Lord and not for men.”- Colossians 3:23 (AMP)
Your title does not determine the value of your obedience.
The real Employer is Christ.
Whether you lead a company, care for children, repair equipment, serve customers, clean a building, teach a class, or manage a household, you can work from the soul, with integrity, excellence, and love.
And God shows no partiality based on position. The executive and the employee stand before Him as people made in His image. The parent and the child both matter. The visible leader and the unseen servant both matter.
Love is the garment that protects dignity across every role.
The Family Wall of Peace
A peaceful household is not a household without problems. It is a household learning how to bring problems under the rule of Christ.
Build the Family Wall of Peace one choice at a time:
- Listen before reacting.
- Tell the truth without humiliation.
- Forgive without pretending the wound did not happen.
- Set boundaries without hatred.
- Pray before making major decisions.
- Look for the best in the other person.
- Return to love when emotions become loud.
This is where the rhythm becomes practical:
SEE ONE. Watch someone respond with patience.
DO ONE. Practice that response in your own household.
TEACH ONE. Help another person build peace into their family.
What if the next generation learns not only what you believe, but how your belief behaves when you are disappointed?
Whatever You Do, Do It in Jesus’ Name
Colossians 3:17 gathers the whole message into one command:
“Whatever you do [no matter what it is] in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus [and in dependence on Him], giving thanks to God the Father through Him.”- Colossians 3:17 (AMP)
Everything means everything.
Your words.
Your work.
Your marriage.
Your parenting.
Your leadership.
Your private decisions.
Your public reputation.
This is the King-Priest life: bringing the authority of Christ into ordinary places while reconciling people to God through love. It is the practical expression of the ministry vision carried through the 20 Stones, established in 2004, and stewarded under Stuart T. Long.
The mission is simple:
- Validate identity through a faith-based reflection on how God saw you before the womb.
- Give permission and encouragement to move into ministry.
The implementation follows two steps:
- Step 1: Receive a Birth Sky Message through Christological Astronomy and the Maji methodology to help you reflect on the “Promised One” in your own life.
- Step 2: Ramp up ministry, be Found, Funded with endowments, Staffed with volunteers, Supported by intercessors, Thrive, Call others up, and Function in the Order of Melchizedek.
As Habakkuk 2:2 teaches, write the vision and make it plain.
But remember: the vision must be clothed in love.
A Word for Anyone Who Feels Unworthy
If you have made a mess of your life, damaged relationships, or believed lies about your worth, do not confuse failure with finality.
May the Lord restore what sin, grief, injustice, and lost years have taken. May He give you wisdom, healing, reconciliation, and provision according to His will. We receive the restoration hope of Scripture, not as a guarantee of a specific payment, amount, or timing, but as an invitation to return to God and begin again.
You are not required to repair everything in one day.
Put on love today.
Let peace decide today.
Let Christ’s Word make a home in you today.
Conclusion: Wear the Garment
Love is not decoration.
Love is the bond that holds everything together.
When compassion becomes difficult, put on love.
When forgiveness feels costly, put on love.
When leadership becomes heavy, put on love.
When your family needs correction, put on love.
When your work feels unseen, put on love.
The outer garment determines how the whole outfit holds.

Would You Like to Receive Jesus?
Would you like to ask Jesus into your heart right now? Yes? Or no?
We believe that when a person is saved, that believer is baptized in the Holy Spirit at the exact moment of salvation. If your answer is yes, you may pray:
Standard Prayer of Salvation
Father God, I come to You in the name of Jesus.
I confess that I have sinned and need a Savior. I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God, that He died for my sins, that He was buried, and that He rose again.
Jesus, I ask You to forgive me, save me, and become Lord of my life. I turn away from sin and place my faith in You. I receive Your forgiveness, Your grace, and Your new life.
Holy Spirit, fill me and lead me. Teach me to follow Jesus, to love God, and to love people.
Thank You, Father, for receiving me as Your beloved child.
In Jesus’ name, amen.
